NPOP inspectors check two things closely: which inputs went on each field, and whether the farm follows a crop rotation that keeps the soil fertile. This episode sets out what to record for inputs and rotations, and how to keep both records complete.

Recording Every Input
Every input goes in the farm diary with date, plot, crop, product, quantity and source, matched to a bill.

The crop production plan required by NPOP lists the inputs used, with their composition, frequency, rate and source. The diary shows the plan being followed.
What NPOP Says About Rotation
Soil fertility is to be kept through legumes or deep-rooted plants, green manures, crop rotation and organic inputs.
The NPOP standards (3.1.8) require organic farms to keep enough diversity to manage pests, weeds and diseases, and to maintain soil fertility through legumes or deep-rooted plants, green manures, a programme of crop rotation, and organic inputs.
Example rotation. Kharif soybean, then rabi wheat, then a green manure such as dhaincha before the next kharif crop. The legume and green manure feed the soil for the cereal.
